A beginner's week camp program
Sunday - arrival
This day is meant for the client to arrive in Brazil, take a domestic flight to Ilhéus, be picked up by an EasyDrop taxi driver and taken to the Pousada (bed & breakfast) in Itacaré.
If the client's arrival happens to be early on Sunday, he would normally use the rest of the day to explore the town on his/her own, walk over to one of the beaches close to the center, or simply chill in the hammock on the veranda of the Pousada recovering from a long trip.
The EasyDrop head surf instructor will show up on Sunday afternoon to handle out to the client the EasyDrop welcome letter containing useful starting information and a town map.
This instructor will also guide the new student through a 10 minutes interview to introduce EasyDrop, find out details about any former wave- and surfing experiences and explain proceedings for the week to come.
Monday - safety and paddling

On this first surfing lesson, starting at the EasyDrop headquarters, the beginner students will receive from their surf instructors an introduction to surfing equipment and its handling, an overview on relevant facts for determination of overall surfing conditions, and standard safety rules to avoid dangerous situations.
The students will then receive their surfing accessories to be used during the surf course, namely rash guard, leash, surfing hat, and carrying strap for the hikes through the jungle.
Students and instructors then take a short walk over to “Praia da Concha”, a wave-less beach near EasyDrop headquarters, where they'll learn how to wax up the board, how to properly paddle, sit on and turn the boards while sitting and while paddling, as well as “turtle” diving and general board handling techniques in the water. Still during this first class the students will be taught the correct technique to stand-up on the board, this first time completely on land.
The EasyDrop surfing manual will be handed out to the students by the end of this class.
Class length: approximately 3-4 hours.
Available optionals on Monday:
- First lesson of the weekly Portuguese Crash Course.

Tuesday - get up in the white wash

The students arrive at the EasyDrop building at a previously announced time to find their boards placed on top of the jeep/van that will take themto the beginning trail of one of the best beginners surfing beaches in the region, generally “Praia da Engenhoca”. After a 15 minute car-ride, everybody goes for a 20 min. walk through the Atlantic rain forest towards the beach.
Upon arrival on the beach and a deserved short rest, students will be guided by their surf instructors up a hill where the surfing set-up can easily spotted. They'll learn to evaluate surfing and weather conditions and to identify and reference the best and safest area to surf. For the next 20 minutes students will then be lead by an instructor through the standard EasyDrop stretching and warm-up program. This is followed by stand-up practice on the sand for a few more minutes. For the remaining time of this surf class (total beach time: 4 hours) students will learn how to catch broken waves and stand up on the gliding surf board, interrupted by regular breaks, in order to rest, re-hydrate, re-apply sun screen, and get detailed feedbacks and instructions for the next session.
All the while, the EasyDrop cameraman is recording all the trials and errors of the students, while instructors communicate amongst themselves with the EasyDrop-unique waterproof radio system.
After the hike and drive back to the EasyDrop headquarter, students return to their Pousada for a shower and a rest before meeting again with one instructor for the daily theory lesson, where with the video footage taken on the beach will be carefully analyzed and all the technical surf details calmly studied and explained while projected on a 100' screen, making it easier to create individual and efficient aims for each student in the next surf session. Other subjects pertinent to surfing are also discussed with the students, and a goal containing maximal 3 technical items to observe will be given to each surf student for the next day. The departure time for the next surf class departure will be given at the end of the lesson.
Practical class length (including transportation and hikes): about 6 hours
Theoretical class length: about 1 to 2 hours
Available optionals on Tuesday:

Wednesday - turning and triming in white wash

The same proceeding as the day before will be followed, leaving EasyDrop towards one of the numerous surfing beaches in the region, chosen by the responsible instructors considering general surfing conditions (tide, swell, weather).
During the training sessions in the white-wash, students and instructors concentrate on the aims created the evening before during the video analysis.
For an average student, this will mean getting more versed in stand-up techniques on this second day in the waves and starting to work on controlling the tip and tail of the surf board by shifting their weight forward and backward and executing small steps on the board, just to keep going as far as possible on the white wash wave.
Every technique taught at EasyDrop will be beforehand learned and practiced as pure body movement on the beach.
On Wednesdays, besides the usual video recording, a photographer will also be present during the lesson to take shots of the students from inside the water with waterproof photo equipment.
Students again return to EasyDrop during the evening for the theory lesson and video analysis, where new aims will be developed for each student.
Practical class length (including transportation and hikes): about 6 hours
Theoretical class length: about 1 to 2 hours
Available optionals on Wednesday:
- Third lesson of the weekly Portuguese crash course.

- “Cozido Nordestino” at the EasyDrop Bar (typical Northeastern Brazilian food)
Thursday - line up and wave reading

Following the same routine as the days before, one of the numerous beaches will be chosen to hold the surf class. At this point of the week, the instructors will try to provide variety by choosing a different beach than on day 2 and 3 (generally best learning conditions point to one particular beach for several days or even weeks in a row).
As always, general surfing conditions will be discussed with the group, gradually passing the observation comments to the students, in order to promote ability to evaluate the conditions themselves.
At this point of the week, the need for individual attention becomes a demand due to the naturally different rates with which each student learns.
Most students will start now practicing turns to the front- and backside, trying to exploit small power pockets of the broken white wash waves that provide extra speed.
After the second break of this class, students and instructors will again discuss surfing conditions, now concentrating on “outside” conditions (deeper water, beyond the impact zone). If conditions allow, most students will now follow instructors, paddling through the channel (if available) to the outside, where they go through new special safety procedures. This is where they start trying to catch their first unbroken (= real) waves, just applying the moves they learned during the prior days in the white-wash.
Once again, the evening theory lessons will be used to review and prepare new aims for the day to come.
Practical class length (including transportation and hikes): about 6 hours
Theoretical class length: about 1 to 2 hours

Friday - first real drops

Maybe, this will be the day to change transportation vehicle, from car to boat, departing in front of the EasyDrop headquarters again to one of the about 12 different surfable beaches of the region. Since students have some basic experience now in getting around on their surf boards in deep water, they'll easily manage the way from the anchored boat to the beach, and back (naturally this will only be done, if surfing conditions allow).
Focus during this lesson is split between half of the lesson on basic surf techniques in the white wash, while the other half focuses on line-up, positioning, timing, and wave choice in the outside, with instructors at their side handing out tips, and the cameraman (which is always another full or in-training surf instructor) providing feedback through water proof radio
After the theory-class, Friday is live-music day at the EasyDrop bar, with the band Drop'n Bossa playing Bossa Nova, Samba, and Jazz.
Practical class length (including transportation and hikes): about 6 hours
Theoretical class length: about 1 to 2 hours
Available optionals on Friady:
- Fifth lesson of the weekly EasyDrop Portuguese Crash Course.

Saturday - hang loose

On this last surfing class the goal for most students is to surf more freely, applying what they have learned throughout the week. They are free to chose whether they go surfing in the white wash or in the outside, and there is no camera on the beach on Saturdays to film them while surfing. Instead, there will again be a photographer in the team, this time taking high resolution pictures with tele-lenses from the beach.
While that, at the EasyDrop head quarters, all the video footage from the week is edited and authored into a nicely formated surf-class DVD, that can be purchased by the leaving students. The same option is available with the high-resolution pictures taken during the week.
In place of the video/theory classes, a Feijoada Carioca (typical Brazilian food) will be organized in the evening at the EasyDrop bar, while the photos from the week are shown as a slide show projected on the big screen.
Practical class length (including transportation and hikes): about 6 hours
Available optionals on Saturday:
- Sixth lesson of weekly EasyDrop Portuguese Crash Course.

Sunday - departure
Sad but true: departure day! Unless the client changes his/her mind last minute and extends for another week (as some do...).
If not, depending on the flight schedule, a last walk through the town to or to the beach, or just a last fresh coconut.
Then the EasyDrop Taxi-team will take the student to the airport of Ilhéus from where he/she leaves back home.
That's it, next time more.
