Self Defense

Jiu-Jitsu was born in India as a self-defense martial art created by monks that couldn´t use force to defend their temples. Later it was practiced in China and Japan, but it was in Brazil that the technique was well developed. The activity works one´s balance either physical, emotional and mental. Its philosophy consists in using the strength of the opponent to beat him. The fight is like a “body chess game”, the fighter must calculate all the possibilities of reaction of the opponent and try to anticipate the other´s moves.

Much more than strength, the fighter must use handspikes and try to unbalance the adversary. The technique varies with traumatic blows (punches, kicks etc) and, mainly, ground moves (arm and leg keys, strangulations etc). The fight ends by punctuation or desistance.

In town, you can try the sport in Itacaré Jiu-Jitsu Club, at the riverside promenade, where there are training sessions from Monday to Saturday in the mornings and evenings. There you can also rent a kimono. Our instructor Zuqueto, world vice-champion of 2005, teaches at the club. “The practice of Jiu-Jitsu works well your resistance. You always use the other´s strength and the more you can tire your adversary, the better”. Zuqueto will participate in the 2006 World Championship with the black belt.
